SCHOOLS
Welcome to Turning Point Leeds, situated in the heart of LS14 at Kentmere Community Centre, Seacroft. We're proud to offer a range of facilities tailored to support the development of young people. Our facilities include a dedicated classroom for academic studies, breakout rooms for personalised mentoring, and a fully equipped kitchen to explore culinary skills. Additionally, we provide a variety of sporting facilities, including a boxing studio, fitness room, and a gymnasium, complemented by a spacious outdoor area ideal for outdoor education.

At Turning Point, we're committed to serving the LS14 community and local schools across Leeds. Our aim is to assist young people in realising their potential and achieving success upon their return to their respective schools.

Turning Point is designed for young people in key stage 3 who are:

-
At risk of suspension or permanent exclusion
-
Pupils who have been permanently excluded and in need of 6 days of provision
-
Not attending or engaging with mainstream education
-
Struggling with the transition from primary to secondary school
Reintegration back to the host school

The reintegration phase is crucial. Turning Point staff will maintain contact with young people and school after their return to the host school through phone calls, video calls (FaceTime), or even in-person visits (if agreed with the host school). Our support for young people continues beyond their return. Reintegration is bespoke and designed to support the young person; it can be structured in any way, whether phased or full.

Maintaining high standards

At Turning Point, we maintain high expectations to ensure a seamless transition back to the young person's host school. While at Turning Point staff prepare the young people for the rigours of mainstream school.

-
All young people are required to wear their assigned school uniform and address staff with the same respect as they would at their host school. (eg. Mrs/Miss/Ms/Mr)
-
Host schools should share their behaviour policies with Turning Point staff to help prepare young people for their return.
-
Mobile phones are handed in and stored in our safe to save any distractions during the day.

* 1-1 mentoring will be fitted in during the day

Breakfast catch up: Building relationships

Each day begins with a meaningful breakfast catch up, fostering strong relationships between adults and young people in our community. This intentional gathering goes beyond breakfast, serving as the foundation for meaningful connections and a sense of belonging. This valuable time for reflection allows both staff and young people to share thoughts, experiences, and aspirations in a safe and supportive space, setting the tone for a positive, collaborative day. Through this daily catch-up, we prioritise the well-being of our community, ensuring everyone feels heard, supported, and empowered to face the day's challenges.

Morning focus: Building Essential academic skills

Our mornings are dedicated to laying the foundation for academic success through core subjects such as Maths, English, and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE). Led by our experienced teachers, students acquire crucial academic skills and engage in meaningful discussions about personal development and well-being through PSHCE. Each pupil has a Century Learning profile where work is set and monitored on that online platform. For more information please see: https://youtu.be/3giqDZKS0T4

Afternoon focus: Skill Development

In the afternoons, we encourage pupils to explore their individual interests in a supportive environment. Our facilities, including the sportshall, boxing studio, fitness room, kitchen, and outdoor spaces, are all available for various projects. Pupils have the opportunity to engage in personalised activities, spanning from physical exercise and sports to gardening, cooking, and creative arts. This tailored approach aims to support holistic development by nurturing each pupil's unique strengths and talents.
Some projects extend beyond the school premises, enriching the students' learning experiences. Through hands-on activities and personalised guidance, pupils develop valuable skills, enhance their confidence, and uncover their passions. Our focus is on promoting autonomy, nurturing curiosity, and allowing each individual to thrive.
Through our 1-1 mentoring program, young people will gain the tools to:

-
Navigate their host school environment: We'll help them overcome academic hurdles and build strong relationships with peers and adults.
-
Explore their unique potential: We'll support the young people in discovering their interests and talents, fostering a sense of purpose and ambition.
-
Build life skills: We'll equip them with valuable skills for managing emotions, resolving conflicts, and making responsible choices.
